DOJ files brief backing anti-Gay baker

by Mike Andrew – SGN Staff Writer The US Department associated with Justice (DOJ) filed an amicus brief on September 7 support a Colorado baker who refused to provide a wedding cake for a Gay and lesbian couple. In 2012, Jack Phillips of Masterpiece Cakeshop, located in Lakewood, Colorado, refused service to David Mullins and Charlie Craig, saying that his religion disapproved of same-sex marriage and that he was prohibited simply by his beliefs from assisting the particular couple’s marriage. Mullins and Craig resided in Colorado but were married in Massachusetts because same-sex marriage was not yet legal in their home state. They ordered the cake from Phillips to commemorate their wedding with friends after they returned home. Phillips told CBS News that he opposed same-sex marriage so strongly that he would stop making wedding cakes altogether rather than create one for a Lesbian or Homosexual couple. Mullins and Craig after that complained to the Colorado

Dear GSBA Members and Friends, One irrational, thoughtless assault against our common humanity after another. Throughout the last few months we have watched our country unravel the principles and values that we strive to live by. I understand that we have deceived ourselves, since those values were never truly enjoyed by all, but we held on to hope as civil rights movement after civil rights movement fought to ensure equality under the law for all. Yesterday, hearing that over 800,000 people in the U.S. who are workers, students, neighbors, friends and family, could be deported and forced to leave the country that they have known as home for most of their lives, has left us all feeling sick and ashamed. How does a country built on immigrant labor, a country whose only ‘true Americans’ are those of us who are Native American, suddenly talk about rescinding the right to live, work and go to school in the home where they were raised? And, yet, the Trump administration’s

Pentagon puts Trans ban on hold as Trans service members sue Trump

by Mike Andrew – SGN Staff Writer Secretary of Defense James Mattis said on August 29 that he will not implement Donald Trump’s order barring Transgender people from serving in the military until a Pentagon panel studies the issue and reports back. ‘Once the panel reports its recommendations and following my consultation with the Secretary of Homeland Security, I will provide my advice to the President concerning implementation of his policy direction,’ Mattis said in the statement. ‘In the interim, current policy with respect to currently serving members will remain in place.’ The additional study will lead the Pentagon to determine if it will allow thousands of Transgender troops to continue to serve or how they will be discharged, and whether they will receive medical transition services. Trump first announced his new policy in a series of tweets on July 26. On August 25, Trump followed up with a formal memorandu

Grays Harbor Pride Festival incident: Bar owner accused of making threats and filing for a permit to hold anti-LGBTQ protest in response

by Shaun Knittel – SGN Staff Writer The organizers of Grays Harbor Pride are proud of the work they do each year, to promote awareness of the LGBTQ community, foster good relations with allies, and they are particularly proud of the message they send to the youth about community, love and acceptance. What started out as a crazy idea (would anyone support an LGBTQ Pride Festival in the area?) has turned into one of the area’s most anticipated and celebrated events. Local business owners, elected officials, and more than a few hundred residents support and attend the LGBTQ-focused events that include everything from drag shows to marches. On August 19, Grays Harbor Pride Festival observed its 4th year in existence. More people than ever attended several events that had been scheduled over the weekend and the feeling that the residents of Hoquiam, Washington and the surrounding towns, truly were ‘proud’ of the LGBTQ community that has, as of the la

Trump thinks Neo-Nazis are ‘fine,’ but Obama-era legal protections have to go

by Mike Andrew – SGN Staff Writer While the Trump administration is reeling from the President’s public endorsement of Neo-Nazis and white nationalists as ‘fine people,’ his Justice Department is quietly reversing the verdicts on Obama-era policies that protect civil rights, healthcare, and the environment. ‘Many of these changes are not just changes in policy, but they’re actually reversing the U.S. government’s official position on what statutes mean,’ says David Cole, legal director for the ACLU. ‘What a statute means ought not to change from one administration to another. The law is the law.’ The sheer number of changes, plus the complete reversal of Obama-era guidelines and administrative rulings suggest that Trump’s aim is not merely to shift legal policy in a more conservative direction, but literally to dismantle all the legal precedents of his predecessor. In some cases, the new administration is threatenin

Is ANY sexual desire a “choice”?

Sexual orientation has a strong physiological component. It appears to be influenced by both genetic and hormonal factors.

• The trait is similar to being left or right-handed; the genetic influence on
both traits is estimated at less than 50%; and both seem to be established at an early age or before birth.

• A same-sex orientation is held by approximately 3-5% of the world’s population. There are twice as many homosexual males as females.

• Sexual orientation is a complex trait which appears to have multiple
mechanisms acting upon it. It is unlikely that there is a single cause,
although it is quite clear that the primary roots of the trait lie in biology.

• Gay men and lesbians are more likely than straight men and women to be left-handed. Since hand preference can be observed in the womb, this suggests a prenatal influence.

• Gay men’s object location memory skills exceed that of straight men. Gay men’s skill level in this involuntary indicator of brain organization between the sexes approaches that of straight women.

• Both lesbians and gay men outperform heterosexual men and women in verbal fluency from early childhood.

How can you explain it?

Which sexual orientations are “ok”?

"All of this logic goes for the sexual paraphilias, too, which are primary patterns of arousal that lie outside the norm. The paraphilias, of course, are less tolerated as a whole than simply being gay, straight, or bi, and we argue over which groups get to use the term sexual orientation, but I see no rational reason not to regard the paraphilias as their own distinct sexual orientations."

"“I don’t ‘hate’ gay people,” they say. “I just disagree with them, that’s all.” By “disagreeing,” either you’re willfully ignoring the obvious fact that sexual orientation is not a choice (which indeed makes you a bigot), or you’re simply unable to grasp the obvious fact that sexual orientation is not a choice (which makes you stupid)."
